4 Tips to Avoid Clogging Your Dishwasher Drain

Dishwashers are modern conveniences that have become a staple in most American homes. Many people wouldn’t know what to do without a dishwasher! It saves a ton of time and cleans dishes much better than hand washing. If you experience regular drain problems with your dishwasher, Curt & Jerry Sewer Service recommends trying the four tips below to keep your dishwasher working at maximum capacity.

1. Rinse the Dishes

It’s always a good idea to scrape food off the dishes before placing them in the dishwasher. However, most modern dishwashers can effectively clean dishes without having to rinse them first. But, if you want to avoid clogging the drain, it’s best to remove all food before loading dirty dishes in the dishwasher.

2. Run the Garbage Disposal

If you have a garbage disposal and you’re experiencing problems with your dishwasher, there’s a simple tip for helping to unclog the drain. The dishwasher drain hose connects from the dishwasher to the garbage disposal drain. If there’s food in the garbage disposal drain, it could prevent the dishwasher from being able to drain properly. Try running the water and the garbage disposal for about 20 seconds to help remove any food clogs.

3. Check the Drain Hose

A dishwasher drain problem may also be related to a problem with the drain hose. If there’s a kink in it, that could prevent the water from draining out properly. Sometimes the hose can be difficult to reach. In cases like this, you may need to call in a professional plumber.

4. Clean Out the Drain Basket

The dishwasher drain basket is located at the bottom of the dishwasher. It’s meant to catch food and other items before reaching your kitchen drain. If it gets too clogged, then the dishwasher cannot drain or work correctly. You should be able to see if the drain basket has food in it. It’s a good idea to double-check it before you load your dishwasher.
