5 Holiday Plumbing Tips to Avoid Sewer & Drain Emergencies

The holiday season is almost here, bringing the joy of families gathering around the table. Unfortunately, it is also a prime time for plumbing problems and unwelcome sewer and drain emergencies. Between the increased usage of your facilities and the added strain on your sewer and drain systems, there is a higher risk of clogs and backups. Follow along as Curt & Jerry Sewer Service provides five holiday season plumbing tips to help you avoid any issues or urgent plumbing situations throughout the season of festivities.

1. Tread Carefully with Any Leftovers

During the holidays, families tend to cook large meals that result in an abundance of leftovers, grease, and oils. Be careful about automatically rinsing everything down the drain, though. All cooking grease and oils should be collected in a container and disposed of properly.

2. Be Mindful of Your Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals are a useful tool, but they are not indestructible. If you misuse yours during the busy holiday cooking and baking season, you might end up with clogs or damage. You should not put fibrous food, such as celery and potato peels, or hard items, like bones or seeds, into your garbage disposal.

3. Protect Your Bathroom Drains

Your bathroom is likely going to see more use with extra guests in your house in the coming months. The increase in showering, hand-washing, and flushing can put additional strain on your drains and sewer lines. Use drain covers to catch hair and other debris, and be sure to monitor how well your water is draining.

4. Plan Ahead for Large Gatherings

With the extra water usage, you’ll want to allow plenty of time in between showers and loads of laundry to maintain your water pressure and drainage. Prior to your guests arriving, you might even want to consider some preventive maintenance like professional drain cleaning or a sewer camera inspection.

5. Watch Out for Warning Signs

Being proactive can save you from experiencing a plumbing emergency. Watch out for warning signs that something isn’t right. If you notice gurgling sounds coming from drains, water backing up in sinks or bathtubs, foul odors emerging from drains, or slow drainage throughout your home, be sure to call a professional.
