How to Keep Your Kitchen Drain Clean and Clog-Free

Is your kitchen sink draining slowly? Are there sour odors coming from your pipes? If so, then you may be in desperate need of a kitchen drain cleanout. At Curt & Jerry Sewer Service, we know how frustrating slow drains or clogged pipes can be. Try the following chemical-free methods to clean or unclog that nasty kitchen drain.

Clean Out Weekly with Hot Water

Prevent the need for cleaning out a clogged sink by providing weekly maintenance. Pour very hot water down your drain once a week. Boil the water or let it run until it’s at its hottest temperature. This method gets rid of food build-up on the inside of your kitchen pipes.

Use Vinegar on a Weekly Basis

Pungent smells and odors are a sign that you need to clean out your kitchen drain. Vinegar is an all-purpose and natural cleaner. Pour one cup of vinegar down the drain once a week. Let it sit for at least 30 minutes, then flush with extremely hot water.

Keep Grease out of the Pipes

You can pour hot food grease down your kitchen sink, but as it cools, it will eventually clog your pipes. Instead, pour the grease in an empty jar and store it, covered, under the kitchen sink. Then throw the grease-filled jar away when full.

Use Wire-Mesh Filters

Food is a major culprit of a clogged and smelly sink. Keep a wire-mesh filter in your sink to catch food that can cause clogs. Many kitchen sink plugs include strainer baskets to catch food and other debris as to prevent blockages and smells.

Run Extra Water with Your Garbage Disposal

If you have a garbage disposal, be sure to run it with extra water when you use it to dispose of food. The bits and pieces of food that remain behind will be pushed all the way through the pipes when extra water is run through them.

Use Clog-Free Tools

If the above methods fail, you may want to use a sink plunger or a snake drain auger. Both of these products can be found at your local hardware store.

There are times kitchen drains need professional service, especially if you’ve exhausted all attempts at cleaning or unclogging them yourself. Contact the expert team at Curt & Jerry Sewer Service today, or call our office at (317) 266-0000 to find out more about our drain cleaning services.
